In the know

Since many of you who may be reading this aren't in the same local TV zone that I am, I feel it is necessary to bring you a news segment that you've been missing.

Don Shelby on WCCO started a new segment on the 10 o'clock news awhile ago.  At some point in the newscast, they pan to Don who is evidently standing in the hallway of their recently remodeled set.  He stands there with his hand alternating between gesturing and being tucked into his pocket.  He nods his head to the side and looks around like a guy might if he were talking to you in person.  And the monologue has apparently been written by a local 9th grade debate class.  Every night.  His opinions and arguments are strange, abrupt and always include some odd phrases.  See for yourself.

Why do I continue to watch it, you might ask?  Two reasons:
1.  My old friend Jeff Thein (now the executive producer at NBC Weather Plus, ooh la la) used to work at WCCO and would tell us stories about going out to Brit's for "Smokin' and Jokin' with Don Shelby".  Sevda and I attended one such evening and hung out with the newscasters at Brit's drinking expensive beer and watching Don Shelby smoke cigars.  This means that Don and I are friends (more than I am with any other newscaster, anyway) so I feel obligated to watch him every night.
2.  They show Hutchinson on the map during the weather segment.

Watching this segment each night makes me feel like I ought to do something.  Maybe I'll start submitting my ideas for another segment they have on WCCO called Good Question.  Each night they have this guy who ponders a question and asks people their opinions.  Here's the list I may start sending in for consideration:
1.  Why does Don have to stand in the hallway?  Isn't there room for him at the desk?
2.  What is on the floor by Don's feet that is so distracting to him while he's in that hallway?  Can someone move it, it seems to be bothering him.
3.  Why doesn't someone edit the stuff he gets from the debate class before Don has to read it on the air?
4.  Does Don still go to Brit's now that you can't smoke in there?
