I have a question

In addition to having a lot of good ideas lately, Martin has also had a lot of questions.  His old standard "Why, momma?" has been replaced with more complicated questions.  At the end of each day when we're both at our most tired, Martin lets me know that he has "one tiiii-ny question".  They usually go something like this:

"Why do we have fingers and only one thumb?"
"Why do trees grow?"
"Why are there houses?"
"Why don't cars drive on sidewalks?"

At first I really try to answer the question using explanations that might make sense to him.  Instead of saying that trees help to give us oxygen, I say things like "so squirrels have a place to play" and "so there is shade for your swimming pool".  But no matter how many answers I give, he doesn't seem satisfied.  Finally, I ask him what he thinks.  His anwswer is always the same:

"Because they do."

On the table last night:  Chicken Vegetable and Oat Soup (it's way better than it sounds).
