Fall festivities
Last Saturday the kids and I we went out to the Nelson Farm (no relation that I know of) with my mom. It was nice to have a break from the rain, but was kind of windy. Normally that wouldn't be too bad, but this farm was near another farm that had recently been fertilized with turkey manure (which is super gross, even in comparison to other manure). Luckily once we were inside the main grounds, it wasn't too smelly and we were mostly blocked by the cold wind.
Here are my mom, Sophie and Martin sizing up one of the State Fair-winning pumpkins. I probably should have checked Martin's pockets to make sure he hadn't smuggled in his scissors to poke holes in the pumpkins.

The kids had their faces painted and we walked through the exhibits. They weren't too interested in most of the actual activities. I think their favorite parts were probably playing in the sandbox and throwing hay.

A lot of the activities there are geared towards kids that are a little older, but Martin found one of the bouncing horses that he could just about ride.

Sophie liked riding on the saddle that was attached to a hay bale. Just the right speed for her. Martin liked trying to untie the bales and remove the saddle.

Sophie loved watching the musicians. There was some kind of concert with little kids playing their violins (known at events like this as fiddles... really though, is there a difference?). She loves music. Again, Martin spent most of his time throwing hay and trying to untie the bales.

Martin loves any kind of farm equipment and was thrilled to go for a ride behind a tractor...even though there wasn't any hay.
