Baby got back(straps)

For the past two weekends, Marty has been going up to "the land" (which is a heavily wooded area that his family owns with two other partners) for some hunting.  This is a completely undeveloped area, so they were forced to make their own RV Nation.  I use "forced" really loosely here because these guys could not have been happier.

On Sunday morning Marty got a deer.  Here's the happiest man in "the land":

To celebrate Marty's victory over the wild, we did a little grilling.  Here's the recipe we used, it was delicious:

Venison Backstrap Marinade
1/2 cup Port wine
3 (3-inch) strips orange peel
1/2 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper
1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
1 bay leaf
1 sprig fresh thyme
Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Place marinade in bag with venison and allow to sit overnight.  Grill as desired.

This marinade is only part of a larger recipe, Roasted Venison Backstrap with Gooseberry Sauce.

Hey, how come there aren't any comments here yet??? It was the shot of the century I'll have everyone know. Call me anytime to discuss the details - I could go on for hours on the subject. Just ask the wife. MAN, am I an awesome hunter!

wow. Marty, you are quite the PROVIDER...literally putting food on the table! I DO like venison (and pheasant). I wish I could come over and have some game at your house.

Mark it down in history! Marty commented!

I want to wait a while before I call for the story Marty - good work. Glad "the wife" can cook it up too. We always just go with the butter and garlic, but the marinade sounds interesting. Somehow, though, I am not feeling the gooseberry whatever coming on. Pretty sure those aren't indigenous to Arizona...

LOL, we couldn't comment because we were blown away by your hunting skills! Plus, your extra fun/cool hunting jacket kept averting my eye from your deer!
