It's my birthday, or Dude! Where's my cake?

Today I am 34, and I LOVE MY BIRTHDAY!

I have a very busy day planned.  I am going to have a root beer float in the morning.  Then, I'm going out for breakfast with friends.  I'm going to have lunch with the kids, then take Martin to school.  I'm going to eat crab legs and steak for dinner with Marty and the kids.  And if there's time, I might even work.

In traditional birthday fashion, we've been discussing my big day for weeks and weeks.  Probably since July 27th which is the day after Marty's birthday.  Because around here, it's all about the anticipation.

Martin's biggest concern has been the cake, which makes sense because to him birthday=cake.  This weekend he told me that Grandma Jane would be making me a cake.  I explained that she probably wouldn't, we weren't going to be together on my birthday.  I also explained that even when we were small, my mom didn't make birthday cakes - she always bought one, which we thought were delicious (Note to my mother: I mean that in a truly good way, not in a bring it up in therapy kind of way).  He stared at me for a moment in disbelief, then I noticed that he looked a little upset.  "She HAS to make you a cake!" he cried.  "She's your MOM!"  I reassured him that it was okay, it was fine that Grandma Jane wasn't making me a cake.  "When you get married," I said, "It becomes your husband's job to make your birthday special," thinking how funny that would be when he relayed that bit of wisdom to Marty.  And that's when he really freaked out, and I realized that I've made a few parenting mistakes along the way.  "Daddy can't MAKE CAKE," he spit out through trembling lips.  "HE'S NOT A WOMAN!"

So, on this day, we'll probably make a cake, since I'm a woman and all.  And I'm a mom.  And I make cakes.  And it's my birthday and birthday=cake.

Happy Birthday! Your day sounds great, can't wait to get the details tomorrow. Did Marty provide a cake? Did Martin tell him he should? Have a wonderful day, wish I was there to celebrate with you!

Happy Birthday, Jennie! 34 years ago at this time of day, I had just checked into the hospital (after stopping to pick up cigarettes) to have my first baby. It was also a Tuesday. I really didn't know what was in store for me...both labor and parenting. Labor was not fun, but the joy of YOU(and your brother)has surpassed any expectations I may have had about having children. I have loved the last 34 years and am sure we will have lots more to share with generation III. Have a great day...Love you. Mom

Happy Birthday Jennie - I missed your count down this year. Glad Martin feels a cake is important. Keep up the importance of "special day" celebrations. Have a wonderful day. Love, Aunt Sue

Happy Birthday Jennie! I bet Marty gave Martin a big ol' high five for that quote.

Your birthday plans sounded awesome, but we had Hello Kitty balloons, American Girl dolls and a birthday girl tiara over at our birthday house today. I recommend keeping the Hello Kitty balloons in mind for next year.
