Lonely little petunia in an onion patch

It occurred to me recently that I haven't been talking about politics much lately.  Not just here, but anywhere.  Years ago, during the stage of my life I like to think of as my "awakening" and my dad probably remembers darkly as "that time", I was pleasantly surrounded by Democrats and politically charged conversations were the norm.  I vividly remember casting my first vote, having marched down to the courthouse to complete my absentee ballot, proudly wearing my "vote for hillary's husband" t-shirt.

Then later, when on our second date Marty told me that he was a Democrat, right then and there I started imagining our future together.  A little house located proudly on Liberal Lane, our energy-efficient cars parked in the driveway, maybe a little NPR playing softly in the background.  But instead, here I am, a speck of blue in a pool of red.  Everywhere I turn one of my family members is attending a fundraiser for a Republican.  My mom, always the head of the Democrat Party of my childhood household, now teetering on the fence to Republicandom, having been abducted adjusted her political affiliation.  And today, my father-in-law called and asked me to send a check from Marty and me to our Republican Governor's campaign effort and I told him that I would pass the message on to Marty, but that a check like would probably bounce in protest.  And he just laughed, saying that he was going to give my dad a call to work on their conversion plan tell him the story.

These days, it seems like the only political strategizing I've been doing is how to keep myself from attending Republican fundraisers and from being referred to as "the token Democrat".  So far, my main approach has been to kick up conversation about how glad
I am to see Ru Paul running for a spot on the Republican ticket.  I mean, seriously, wouldn't this be a Republican debate worth watching?

Jennie, you are so funny. I am sorry for the predicament you are in being surrounded by all of the hopeful republicans. Interesting times!!!

I would totally vote Republican if I could vote for Ru Paul. In fact, I would not even resent it when President Ru bumped my favorite TV show to deliver the state of the nation.
