The days are divided into one thousand small projects
Young children have pretty short attention spans. For anyone who has small children or spends a lot of time with them, this statement comes as no small surprise. And yet, after almost six years of having kids, sometimes it's still shocking how many projects and activities we go through in a single day. All it takes is one look around the house to see the frenzy of activity that takes place each day. Well, either that, or we are robbed and ransacked every single day. Sometimes its hard to say.
The kids are getting better at playing on their own some of the time. Martin is occupied for long stretches of time building stuff, playing pretend, and hanging out on his own. The kind of private, busy time that draws Sophie to him like a magnet, where she immediately disrupts the activity. I think this is the natural phenomenon known as SIBLINGS.
Last weekend, in an attempt to keep everybody busy, I sat the kids down at the counter with a pile of supplies and told the kids that it was time to make an Invention. The initial idea was Martin's idea, really, inspired by two matching and empty boxes of Pop Tarts. "We could make something out of those," he told me. And so we did. With some string, hole punches, pencils, tape, and by channeling our inner MacGyver - Toy Elevators were born. Here are Martin and Sophie transporting a reindeer from the main floor to the basement, which is obviously the only way to go for anything that is small and lightweight.
So, we'll color, draw, read, watch a movie, wrestle, punch, listen to music, dance. We'll play barbies, playdoh, power rangers, doctor, teacher, momma, sister, cars, and birthday. We'll have an obstacle course, jumping contests, do some laundry and make chicken noodle soup. And that should take us through lunch.
Viva la busy.

It all sounds like so much fun -- but just reading it made me want a nap! Martin & Sophie really are clever.
